I really didn't know what to expect at Aldea. I didn't even know what Portuguese food was?? All I knew was that we were going to try the sea-urchin toast and the sonhos (fried doughnut) dessert. Although most critics/ reviews recommended the arroz de pato dish, we decided to settle on fish dishes, not because we didn't want to try it, but because we'd been eating a lot meat recently and it was starting to show around our waist.
So, we literally ordered everything fish. Shrimp, Sea Urchin, Cod, Scallops, Tilefish...
Salt Cod Croquettas
Sea Urchin Toast
Shrimp Alhinho (garlic, coriander, pimenton, pressed jus)
New Bedford Diver Scallops (farro risotto, cucumber, orange)
Tilefish (crispy brussels sprouts, green mango, lemongrass-ginger broth)
Even though the duck confit is Aldea's signature dish, I would've thought that they were famous for their fish dishes. That's how good the dishes were. All the dishes were cooked perfectly that it just melted in my mouth. The fish wasn't the only superstar of each dish. Even the sides were good. They complimented the fish really well.
Would I go back? Definitely. I'm going back there to try the arroz de pato. After all, they were just featured on NY Mag's Best of 2010.
